Times Tables Rockstars
Times Tables Rock Stars
New, higher standards in ‘Times Tables’ for primary children
Being confident with times tables is really important for children in primary school and regular practice of tables and reading are the two most valuable ways parents can support children in their learning.
To achieve well in maths throughout school, children need to be able to recall any times tables (up to 12x) and answer within two or three seconds. This leaves no time for counting up to the answer from 2x, 3x, 4x etc. and is called ‘fluency’.
Whether children have achieved this standard of fluent up to 12x will be measured in Y4 from 2020, with the new National Multiplication Check test.
Times Table Rock Stars
To support children with this, we have introduced Times Table Rock Stars for children in Y2 to Y6. This replaces Mathletics, which has been underused for the past few years.
The website can be accessed at: https://ttrockstars.com and the children have been provided with their log in details. We have received very positive feedback about this on-line learning website from other schools.
There are different games on the website that children can play to practise their recall of the times tables and the related division facts. The website has a ‘rock star’ theme and children create their own avatar, which ensures their identity is kept anonymous. Children can earn imaginary coins as they become more successful in answering the questions and competing in the games. These coins can be used to purchase avatar props to motivate them to practise more regularly.
Children are able to play against the clock or compete against other children using the website. In the ‘Garage’ section, children will only be able to practise the times tables that their teacher may set. In the other sections, they are able to practise all of the times tables up to 12 x 12 as well as the related division facts. For children in Years 3 and 4, the ‘Sound Check’ section is particularly relevant as it mimics the new Year 4 test.
